The Story of our Durable RX Vial Cap Opener

I was talking with my sister, who currently works for a Very Very Large Big Box Store Pharmacy, and she was expressing her frustration removing the childproof outer cap from the RX bottles she was dispensing. The kind that click when you turn the bottle cap. Many people ask their pharmacist to remove that outer cap since it's hard to do with arthritis or other conditions. She described the tool they use and how it would work one out of five times and sometimes not at all.

Most of the time it will just bend and would need straightening, or it pulled the entire cap off. The red handled tool was poor at best for the removal of the childproof lid outer cap. She also said on the small diameter liquid bottle it was even less likely to work. They found they used the edge of the counter to remove the lid when all else failed.

She asked if I thought I could help by designing a tool that would work more reliably and on a wide range of lid diameters to cover the dry as well as the liquid filled bottles. The challenge was on and the D-CAPer was developed.

In testing we found it worked on lids 2.5” to .75” in diameter on liquid or dry type bottles. The success rate was also considerably better at 10 out of 10 when used with a continuous steady motion and no jerking.

A new medicine bottle opener was the result of this need. A better RX bottle opener.
